There are many reasons that medications can be difficult to swallow. This can affect people of all ages and even our pets. When this occurs and there are no liquid or other alternative medication forms, tablets may need to be crushed into a powder and sprinkled into food such as applesauce or pudding or mixed into a liquid so they can be taken. So, for all those out there that have had to crush medications you know this may not necessarily be the easiest task. One might grab a rolling pin or meat tenderizer from the kitchen drawer and begin a pounding or vicious process to break medications down to only find a big mess or that there are still large chunks or medication remaining. Spoons in the drawer may even be tried as a smashing tool. You realize these tools are not an effective way to crush your medications and you worry how much of your medication are you really consuming after all this mess. You say to yourself this should be easier and safer. You ask a doctor, relatives or friends about what they’ve used or would recommend.
The next step you take is a drive to the local pharmacy or grocery or even a visit to Google. You talk to a pharmacist that recommends a crusher and purchase locally or order one online to be shipped to your house. Things are good. It looks like you’re going to have an easy way to tackle the process of crushing your medications. Your new crusher is ready for use. Chances are you picked up some type of pill crusher that is twist style in which you remove the top and place your tablets into the bottom. So, you’ve placed your medications into the crusher and begin to twist and follow the instructions for crushing. The first thing you notice is the crusher is not real comfortable in your hand and might even be hard to twist. This isn’t good. Who wants their hands to hurt?? The next thing you notice is that the crusher really isn’t breaking your pills up very well and you still have large chunks so you continue trying to crush but nothing is really getting any better. Then when you remove the top part of the crusher to get your medication you have a messy residue all over the crusher and maybe on your hands. So, you are thinking to yourself maybe I crushed too many medications at once. The next time you go to crush your pills you follow the instructions but load fewer pills. The initial twist is a little easier but the crusher doesn’t feel comfortable and is still not delivering a powder without chunks. And you still have quite a bit of residue. After your attempt of using the first crusher you purchased you don’t feel that great about the pill crusher you have in hand so you go online or back to the pharmacy to see what else is available. After asking around or talking to the pharmacist again you decide to try another crusher. With this new crusher you have a very similar experience to the first crusher you purchased. It can feel hard to twist or crush, medications just aren’t crushed well and you seem to have a messy powder or too much medication is left behind in the crusher. So, the process of crushing your medications turns into a not so pleasant experience. The same thing is happening with the pet owner that is crushing medications to sprinkle into their dog’s food or the family member or caregiver crushing medications for delivery through a feeding tube.
